My name is Evelyn Fielding. I’ve been a professional freelance writer for almost 10 years, and was semi-professional for 10 years before that. Yes, I work from home. No, I don’t make a million dollars a year. Do you need me for freelancing, article marketing, editing, and ghostwriting? Send me an email or visit my Hire Evelyn page.
Am I happy? You bet. Am I good at what I do? Yep. Do I want you to know what I know? Of course.
This website is a sanctuary for freelance writers, written by a freelancer who actually does it for a living. In my writing adventures I’ve encountered thousands of great ideas and come up with a few all on my own. The end result is my FOCUS Training: Step by Step Exercises for writers who want to build a sustainable freelance writing business.
On the FOCUS Student Blog, you’ll find articles that treat you like the smart person you are and lend a helping hand if you have questions about writing for a living. You want to better your skills and your bank account, so we never waste time with silly fluff.
I wish someone had been there for me at the beginning of my career…sure would have saved a lot of frustration, disappointment, and dead-end roads. I’m here for every member of the FOCUS Training series, to support you in your career growth.
Oh–in case you’re trying to HIRE a freelance writer, my writing, editing, and ghostwriting services are available, of course. Drop a message to conqueror (at) 10000seeds (dot) com and we’ll discuss your projects.
I wrote a little “allegory” if you’re thinking of buying content for your website. Enjoy, and don’t miss the “moral of the story” at the end!
The Allegory of the Freelance Writer
Imagine for a moment that it’s time to go shopping for school clothes again, the annual ritual of dressing your child for academic and social success. Imagine further you’re the proud parent of a 14-year-old girl. She’s smart and mature and beautiful and brings so much joy to your life.
You set out with a fistful of credit cards to buy your daughter the trendiest school clothes, so she’ll be happy and attract positive attention. On your way into the store, a very nice woman pulls you aside and whispers, “I’ve got this wonderful selection of school clothes at a steep discount. Buy these.”
In her hand is a bulging black garbage bag.
“These are the latest hot fashion trends,” the woman continues. “These clothes are fully optimized to attract massive traffic, and they’re fresh and original.” Her sales pitch seems a bit strange, but you continue to listen. “You can have the whole bag for just $15. There are fifteen articles of clothing in here.”
“Can I see inside the bag?” you ask, because you’re a smart consumer.
“You get all 15 articles for just $15. And they’re brand new!” The woman smiles broadly and thrusts the bag into your hands.
Are you chuckling yet, imagining this scene? Would you ever buy your beautiful teenage daughter a garbage bag full of clothes that she’d never tried on? You’d just be throwing your money away if you did that. Sure, it’s a bag of clothes. Your daughter can wear them to school, and the nice lady promised these articles were fresh and original. They’re fully optimized, isn’t that what she said?
Now switch gears with me for a minute. How would your daughter feel if you dumped a garbage bag of clothes on her? If you wouldn’t dress your daughter like that, why would you dress your website or blog like that?
Sure, you can get a whole garbage bag full of articles for super-cheap, and you would be covering your virtual nakedness. But do those discounted articles make you look good? Do they attract the type of attention you’re looking for?
It’s your choice, but consider your website’s feelings before you dump a garbage bag full of cheap articles onto it. Premium content gets premium results. Making your website or blog happy brings so much joy into your life—and your bank account.
Don’t just cover your virtual nakedness with any old articles. Dress for success with well-written, thoughtful, provocative content. Good content engages readers, draws them in and makes them want to spend their money with you. And that, my friends, is worth paying a fair price.
If you’ve taken my story seriously, you’re in the market for a good writer. Why not check my Hire Evelyn page to see what I can do to dress your website?
